Choosing a Safe Holster
There’s much more to choosing the right holster than you might think. And the wrong one will not only make you not want to wear it, but it could be a safety liability. So how do you choose the right one? First let’s remember what the core purpose of your holster is, and that’s to safely and comfortably conceal your firearm for anytime ready access in the event it is needed. So keeping that in mind, here’s the breakdown:
Safely Secure
Your firearm, should fit snug enough to know without question it’s in its place. Nothing will create more of a safety concern for you and your loved ones, than if your firearm is too loose in it’s holster. Contrarily, if the fit is too tight; you have an equal and opposite problem and that is it’s not coming out when you need it. At least not without a fumble and a double effort, by which time it’s too late. Fit is essential. This cannot be emphasized enough. Every firearm has a unique shape and geometric attributes. This has to be taken into consideration when holstering a weapon. These aren’t shoes, which we all know how important that is for proper fit. It’s even more important, and perfection is the only word that can describe what kind of fit that you need on your weapon.
Comfortably Concealed
Comfort is key, you’ll not wear it otherwise. And every person has a different waistline, sitting and walking habits. So how do you get it right? Well firstly you need options. Pick the right company to make your holster not only for you firearm, but for YOU. How do you want to wear it, what hand do you draw with, how can you draw it away from your body yet easily yielded into proper position? Ask these questions of yourself and your instructor. Practice makes perfect. You need to know these answers before you make your selection. You’re going to be wearing it afterall, it’s a wearable item. Some common options include outside the waistband or inside the waistband, also the dominant draw hand that you favor. Ask questions and practice.
Easy Accessibility
There are infinitely things that can go wrong in the heat of the moment. You’ve planned for this in your mind a thousand times. You reach for your firearm to protect a citizen or loved one, and it’s placement is off. Your accessibility decisions were made incorrectly and you fumble. Seconds lost, and lives at stake. Now you should have already practiced this, and already known that an accessibility issue existed. But when making a buying decision do not make a compromise on this. Understand your body, your arm length, flexibility to reach and placement selection on your waist. Front or back? Inside or Outside? Neither, none, all? Yes is the answer, it depends on YOU. Ask questions of your trainer, ask questions of your custom holster maker and practice make perfect.
